What is the difference between a normal low mood and Depression?
Everyone has bad days and experiences the normal ups and downs of life where you feel better the next day, but depression is ongoing in nature. If you have experienced 5 or more specific depression symptoms present during the same 2-week period, you may need to seek professional support and counselling.
What are some of the signs of depression?
Depression comprises a number of experiences and symptoms:
- Depressed mood most of the day, nearly every day (i.e. feeling sad, empty, hopeless)
- Diminished interest or pleasure in all, or almost all, activities most of the day, nearly every day.
- Significant weight loss, decrease or increase in appetite
- Insomnia or hypersomnia
- Agitation
- Fatigue or loss of energy
- Feelings of worthlessness
- Difficulty thinking, concentrating and indecisiveness
- The symptoms cause distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of life
